A blind female Ethiopian lawyer has been named a joint winner of the 2017 Right Livelihood Award, also known as Sweden’s alternative Nobel Prize. The 35-year-old human rights lawyer Yetnebersh Nigussie was on Tuesday awarded 3 million Swedish crowns ($374,000) which will be shared among the three joint winners. She was honoured for her inspiring work promoting the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities. I started my fight, not by telling people, but showing people that I'm able to contribute. I have one disability but I have 99 abilities. “I really want to see a world where nobody is discriminated because of his or her disability or any other status,” she told the Thompson Reuters Foundation. “I started my fight, not by telling people, but showing people that I’m able to contribute. I have one disability but I have 99 abilities,” she added. Yetnebersh Nigussie went blind at the age of five and was considered unfit in the community. Her parents enrolled her at the Catholic boarding school for girls with disabilities in the capital Addis Ababa where her life changed for the better, she narrated. Nigussie, who is also a senior advisor at a charity that promotes disability rights said education was her turning point in her life and she pushed to make a difference. She was one of three women to study law at Addis Ababa University in 2002 and she had to transcribe audio recordings of her legal books into braille throughout of her five-year degree. “I was lucky to be educated. Education was a turning point that changed my blindness into an opportunity,” she said. Yetnebersh Nigussie is among the first three blind women who went to law school and she helped establish the Center for Students with Disabilities at the Addis Ababa University and the Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development (ECDD). She has won several awards and she says the Right Livelihood Award is her biggest so far. Nigussie is married with two daughters. She won the joint prize with Colin Gonsalves, an Indian human rights lawyer, and female journalist Khadija Ismayilova for revealing government corruption in Azerbaijan. -Video Upload powered by https://www.TunesToTube.com

BBC 5 Live's Victoria Derbyshire interviews 'fugitive' Mohammed Ahmed Mohammed's lawyer Gareth Peirce BCfm presenter Patrick Cyrus (the Virus) describes his initiation and mock execution in the British Army 15Nov13 - www.thisweek.org.uk The real question about the terror suspect who fled in a burqa: did MI5 bring him here illegally? Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed's escape was an embarrassment. The alleged torture and rendition that came before it might just be a major scandal Ian Cobain - The Guardian, Wednesday 13 November 2013 18.40 GMT http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2013/nov/13/terror-suspect-burqa-mi5-rendition The hunt was on from the moment that terrorism suspect Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed sliced off the electronic tag that was strapped around his ankle, donned a burqa and slipped away from a London mosque. Within hours, the Home Office was announcing that a joint taskforce of police, Border Agency officials and MI5 officers had been ordered to track him down. According to some reports, undercover soldiers were also drafted in. One newspaper declared that Mohamed had "made a mockery" of the government's claim to protect the public, while another offered a reward for information leading to his capture: "£25k to Find the Burka Bunker". Behind the headlines about the manhunt, however, lies another story. It is one that is a little less dramatic. But in the eyes of some, it is a story that is far more disturbing. Mohamed was in Britain against his will: he had been forced aboard an aircraft in Somaliland, the breakaway territory in northern Somalia, and flown to the UK in March 2011 in an operation that his lawyers say amounted to little more than an act of rendition. He and a second man had been detained in Somaliland two months earlier and allegedly suffered severe mistreatment while they were being interrogated. Since then, evidence has emerged that the British government had a hand in their detention, and may have supplied many of the questions. As a consequence, the coalition government is now facing, for the first time, serious allegations of complicity in rendition and torture. The men's accusations, if true, would appear to flatly contradict the assurances given by the heads of the three main intelligence agencies when they stepped out of the shadows for the first time last week, telling the intelligence and security committee they have learned a great deal since 9/11, and that "at this stage" their officers could not possibly become complicit in torture. However, the public may never learn whether the allegations are true or not: when Mohamed and the second man decided to sue the British government for damages, lawyers representing the intelligence agencies called upon the secret justice provisions of the highly controversial Justice and Security Act. It is the first time that the government has resorted to these provisions since the act became law earlier this year. As a consequence of this move, any evidence that the government itself possesses that supports the allegations is unlikely ever to see the light of day. Instead, any such evidence will be heard by the court in secret, and part of the court's final judgment will also remain concealed. Mohamed, 27, and the second man, a 25-year-old, are both British citizens of Somali descent. MI5 is satisfied that both are terrorists who are deeply involved with al-Shabaab, the group that carried out the attack on Nairobi's Westgate shopping mall in September. While the two men deny this allegation, Mohamed is assessed to be linked to a group said to have received terrorism training from Saleh Nabhan, a leading al-Qaida figure suspected of involvement in the 1998 US embassy bombings in east Africa. He is also said to have received terrorism training and to have fought for al-Shabaab, and is accused of helping other British men slip into and out of Somalia, where his wife and two children live. It appears that, in January 2011, CF wished to return to the UK via Addis Ababa, and asked Mohamed to help him travel across Somaliland and on to the Ethiopian border. On the night of 14 January, while staying in a house in the town of Burao, the pair heard a helicopter hovering overhead. Moments later, a group of armed and uniformed men burst through the front door, forced hoods over their heads and tied their hands tight behind their backs. CF claims he could hear the leader giving orders in English, with a British accent. At one point, the hoods were said to have been lifted briefly so that their faces could be checked against what appeared to be mugshots. Both men say they were fingerprinted and that DNA swabs were taken from inside their cheeks; CF says "Bravo 1" was written across his forehead.

Addis Abäba, IPA: [ädˈdis ˈäbəbä] ( listen), “new flower”; Oromo: Finfinne,[3][4] [fɪnˈfɪ́n.nɛ́] "Natural Spring(s)"), sometimes spelled Addis Abeba (the spelling used by the official Ethiopian Mapping Authority), is the capital city of Ethiopia. It is the largest city in Ethiopia, with a population of 3,384,569 according to the 2007 population census with annual growth rate of 3.8%. This number has been increased from the originally published 2,738,248 figure and appears to be still largely underestimated.[2][5] As a chartered city (ras gez astedader), Addis Ababa has the status of both a city and a state. It is where the African Union and its predecessor the OAU are based. It also hosts the headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and numerous other continental and international organizations. Addis Ababa is therefore often referred to as "the political capital of Africa" due to its historical, diplomatic and political significance for the continent.[6] The city is populated by people from different regions of Ethiopia – the country has as many as 80 nationalities speaking 80 languages and belonging to a wide variety of religious communities. It is home to Addis Ababa University. The Federation of African Societies of Chemistry (FASC) and Horn of Africa Press Institute (HAPI) are also headquartered in Addis Ababa. (Wikipedia)

An Ethiopian lawyer and lecturer with the Keele University in the United Kingdom says the re-arrest of journalists and politicians back home is a sign that the government was clueless about how to exit the current political crisis. Awol Allo in an interview with Radio France International (RFI) held that the development which took place over the weekend was, however, not a surprise to most watchers of Ethiopian politics over the past few years. He said for the government to order the fresh de… READ MORE : http://www.africanews.com/2018/03/26/ethiopia-re-arrests-shows-govt-has-no-clear-policy-to-exit-crisis-lawyer Africanews on YouTube brings you a daily dose of news, produced and realised in Africa, by and for Africans. The Ethiopian lawyer and women's rights activist discusses the matter-of-fact way too many patriarchal men treat rape. Read more at BigThink.com: http://bigthink.com/videos/meaza-ashenafi-discusses-difret Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript - Ethiopia is a country with over 19 million population and the country was a long history very rich culture. And unfortunately some of the traditional practices and norms affect women negatively. And the practice of telefa, which is abducting girls for marriage, is one of the harmful practices that affect the physical and mental as well as social-economic lives of women in Ethiopia. I heard about the story on the radio. I was in a car. I was a driver and we were listening to a radio and there was media coverage about 14-years-old girl being abducted and raped and killing her would the husband. So as soon as I learned about the story, I immediately thought that we should be going to this place, which is 300 km outside of Addis Ababa where we work. And we should be able to defend the girl. I thought about this because I believed that we should save her life because she was facing like a life sentence. And secondary, also I knew that this is going to be a big case, precedent-setting case, which we could use for public education to enhance the dialogue and the conversation around abduction around telefa. Such a story is, for some people, especially people living in the West, it's completely outside their experience; in that sense it will educate people on how women live in the other part of the world. Secondly, it's also a call to action. I believe educational institutions, women's rights organizations and government and non-government institutions whose mandate focus on gender equality would like to use this film for advocacy, for legal reform and to sort of enhance and accelerate programs towards especially fighting child marriage around the world. That's my hope. Getting Angelina Jolie was quite helpful — the movie, the content, the history, the presentation is fantastic, but her agreeing to be executive producer really took it to another level, to another height and I think that was kind of her. I think this film is quite educational in that sense because it does not necessarily judge the community. It does not necessarily sort of point a finger to the community; it sort of shows where the thinking comes from. So it sort of makes you to have a conversation with yourself because it makes you — it's not an easy sort of sin because these people, they have lived with this tradition for a number of years and that's what they know. That's what they believe. From time to time we need to go back to the drawing board and we need to have some real conversation on why these things are happening. It's not enough to say, "Well it's the culture; well it's a tradition." We need to discuss about, unpack and discuss about why this is happening.
